Greg Uttsada Panichkul, also known as VJ Utt, born on September 03, 1974, is an MTV VJ, model, host and actor. Before he became the wacky but lovable video jockey in MTV Asia’s Bangkok Jam, Most Wanted, and MTV Screen, VJ Utt (pronounced “AHT”) was an exile.

Greg Uttsada Panichkul was a wild kid growing up in San Fernando, California where he was born to an American mother and a Thai father. A monk once took one look at the rowdy 17-year-old Thai-American and said the boy had “bad luck” written all over him. Hoping to change her son’s luck and his attitude, mom sent Utt to Thailand to live with grandma and to imbibe the local culture and mores. “Because I was a very naughty boy, my parents kind of left me in Thailand with absolutely no money,” he says. “So I took a modelling job to earn a plane ticket back to the States.”

Utt earned more than just plane fare. He put his burgeoning modelling and acting career on hold for two years to earn a Communications Arts degree from Thailand’s Assumption University. Then, he stuck it out in the land of his forefathers for the next eight years.

What Utt really wanted was to be a VJ. In the pre-MTV era, there was a 24-hour music channel in Thailand called Smile TV. “I saw how some of the VJs were bilingual and I knew it was something I wanted to do,” says Utt. He went to the show’s office, did a screen test, and was promptly hired. For the next three years, Utt displayed his veejaying prowess at Smile TV and even spun off two shows, one of which he co-hosted with younger brother, Jerry.

Enter MTV. “I auditioned at MTV the old-fashioned way (he sent a tape) like any other VJ wannabe,” Utt explains. An audition for Bangkok Jam was held at Bangkok’s Hard Rock Café. At that time, MTV was looking for a Chinese-speaking female VJ so Utt had to cool his heels waiting for his turn to show his stuff. He was the last applicant on the audition line that day. “I gave them all I had!” says Utt. Two nerve-wracking weeks dragged on before Utt received a call informing him that he qualified for the second round of auditions in Singapore, followed by another two weeks of hellish suspense waiting for the final verdict. He, of course, got the part.

While he enjoys being a VJ, Utt also loves acting. “Acting allows me to show my serious side,” he says. He is cast as an HIV-positive commercial sex worker in the critically acclaimed Thai drama series, Song Klam Doag Rak. The series received an award during World AIDS Day last year for its realistic portrayal of the AIDS problem facing Thailand and its inspiring message of hope.

Utt, a spokesperson for Thailand’s AIDS Awareness and Blood Donation Drive, is excited about his role. “MTV viewers, many of whom are teenagers, can really learn a lot from the drama, especially about the social issues involved in HIV/AIDS.” For his performance in Song Klam, Utt was nominated Best Actor by the Thailand Television Awards.

Borgy Manotoc

Manotoc was born on April 9, 1983, in Honolulu. He is the grandson of the late Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos and son of re-elected Ilocos Norte representative Imee Marcos. His father, sportsman Tommy Manotoc, gave him the moniker Borgy, after the tennis icon Bjorn Borg. Manotoc has vague recollections of his childhood.

The edsa Revolution, which deposed Marcos and sent the First Family into exile, is history to him. His earliest memory of childhood was studying in London. The Manotocs travelled intensively and lived in Portugal. Florida and Singapore before returning to the Philippines. He went to Ateneo and International School, then started his college course in San Diego before transferring to New York.

Borgy is a model/actor in the Philippines. To legions of Filipino consumers, the memory of advertising image of Manotoc’s lean, muscular frame and six-pack abs, encased only in a pair of Bench jeans still lingers.

Manotoc doesn’t exactly fit the mould of the glamorous bachelor with the jet-setting lifestyle in the back book of glamorous girlfriends. He is the antithesis to the Filipinos’ perception of a Marcos. The Marcoses are known for their dramatic and fashionably late entrances. Manotoc is punctual for his appointments. His family is “perplexed,” as Manotoc says, that he chucks in read meat and fancy cuisine for tofu,
soy patties and veggie burgers, and colas for soy milk. His grandmother, former First Lady Imelda Marcos, his mother, Representative Maria Imelda “Imee” Marcos and his aunt, Irene Araneta, are in fashion’s Hall of fame for their unerring taste in designer clothes and blingblings. Manotoc, on the other hand, shops in New York’s thrift shop and vintage boutiques for clothes that express his individuality. If the Marcosses have been notorious for their flash and panache, Manotoc is the quintessential G.I or Genuine Ilocacano.

His prudence is trait inherent in the people of Marcos country, Ilocos. “I’m kuripot [frugal] all the way. At times I splurge but I save a lot. It’s part of who I am. It’s important to think of my goals. Money is very fleeting; and it’s not easy to acquire, I try to make do what I can. There’s no need to live an excessive lifestyle. I don’t need it,” he says.

Unlike the Marcoses who where encircled by sycophants in their halcyon days. Manotoc is quick to deflect any kind of flattery.” It’s important to surround yourself with good people. My friends have treated me no differently, regardless of the celebrity status I have achieved,” He adds that his brothers keep him from getting swell-headed. “That’s the way our dynamics are. That’s what I love about them. They keep me in check.”

Manotoc’s enthusiasm, simplicity, clear thinking and candour – to say nothing of his rugged looks and flushing white teeth win admiration. He is characteristically polite, graciously excusing himself to answer a call from his mother. Later on, he insists on picking on the tab, instead of allowing this journalist to exercise etiquette when interviewing sources.

He is the antithesis to the Filipinos’ perception of a Marcos… If the Marcoses have been notorious for their flash and panache, Manotoc is the quintessential G.I. or Genuine Ilocano.”

A health buff, Manotoc slowly eats his fruit platter and eschews the cottage cheese. His lunch is accompanied by a glass of ice cold water. He reveals that the ambience of a five-star hotel is not part his world. “I live two different lives. My reality here and my reality abroad are so completely opposite,” he says.

He is a junior at the City College of New York, majoring in advertising and public relations, and works part-time at an independent record label, earning modestly doing A & R. Like most locals, he goes around the city by foot or by subway. More than anything, he enjoys a democratic society that accepts him for being himself. He sees life in New York as a quest for testing his powers, yet he knows he would meet a host of a college student to that of a “bottom feeder of society, scrounging around for the next meal.” When Imelda Marcos is in New York, Borgy is shown affluence – the limousine service, fancy restaurant and Waldorf-Astoria. From his school in East Harlem, an unglamorous part of New York, he meets her in midtown. “I couldn’t even go to this place she was taking me because I didn’t have a suit,” he says. “That’s not my everyday kind of thing. But I get to see the whole social hierarchy.”

During Christmas and summers, Manotoc flies home to the Philippines, where he is exposed to the lifestyle of the elite and faces the blessing and the curse of being grandson of President Ferdinand Marcos. “I was always this free-wheeling kid. I never thought about who I was. It was a humbling experience to learn about being part of something bigger than you, “he says.

For all his effervescence and playfulness, Manotoc reveals that he’s also not the easiest person to live with, especially with undercurrents of stubbornness and impulsiveness. He admits that he could borrow a lesson on compromise and balance. “I do everything at full steam all the time. It’s hard to live with me because I either go all the way or not at all. I can get up and down. If people are not consistent, it’s hard to predict the way they are going to act. At the same time, I like people that way because they keep me interested.”

This year, Manotoc is looking ahead at what is still out there to be conquered. “I don’t believe in fate, but I believe in creating destiny. It’s up to us to fulfill it.”

Marc Nelson arrived in the Philippines in the late 90’s for a diving holiday but ended up staying for good, working the catwalk, hosting TV shows and teaching a step or two in Eezy Dancing. He soon became the face of Bench Underwear.

Born Marc Saw Nelson on Valentine’s Day in Sydney, Australia, Marc admits that modeling is something he never even considered doing. For the next five years, he remained the All-Around National Wushu Champion of China.

Shortly after retiring from the sport at the age of 17, he was offered many starring roles and subsequently began on his film career with director Chang Hsin Yen for Shaolin Temple. Upon its release, Li was propelled into instant movie stardom and the film was an enormous success that spawned two sequels. This led to Li completing 25 successful Asian films before coming to America.

Since his first English language film appearance as the villain in Lethal Weapon 4 opposite Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Rene Russo and Chris Rock, Li went on to star in the highly acclaimed Romeo Must Die, a film that blended hip-hop with martial arts and also marked Aaliyah Haughton’s first starring role in a film.

During production on Romeo Must Die Li announced his upcoming marriage to his long-time girlfriend, Nina Li. The couple married in September of 1999.

After Romeo Must Die, Li went on to star in Kiss of the Dragon opposite Bridget Fonda and Tcheky Karyo, and The One directed by James Wong and co-starring Delroy Lindo and Jason Statham.

Following completion of The One, Li returned to his film roots in China to work with renowned director Zhang Yi Mou on Hero, a film which has gone on to achieve significant critical acclaim and international distinction. The U.S. release of this film is scheduled for sometime in the second half of 2004.

After Hero Li once again teamed up with Producer Joel Silver and co-star DMX on Cradle 2 the Grave which was released in theaters in early 2003. Following Cradle Jet returned to Europe to work again with Producer Luc Besson on Danny the Dog, co-starring Morgan Freeman and Bob Hoskins. Danny is scheduled for a 2004 release.

Born in Hong Kong, with ancestry in Taishan, Guangdong, China, Tony Leung was brought up by his mother in a single-parent family. In 1982, after passing the training courses of the television channel TVB, Tony Leung became an actor and became known for his comedy roles in television and film.

Many consider Tony Leung’s role in director John Woo’s 1992 action film Hard Boiled where he acted with Chow Yun-Fat as his breakthrough role. However, Leung first gained international exposure through Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s 1989 film A City of Sadness, which won the Venice Golden Lion.

Leung often collaborates with director Wong Kar-wai and has appeared in many of his films. His most notable roles in Wong Kar-wai’s films include the lonely policeman in Chungking Express (1994), a homosexual Chinese expatriate living in Argentina in Happy Together (1997), and a repressed victim of adultery in In the Mood for Love (2000), for which he won the Best Actor award at Cannes.

He is considered by many to be the finest actor of his generation in Hong Kong. Robert de Niro, who is an admirer of his work, has called Leung Asia’s answer to Clark Gable.

He is good friends with actor and comedian Stephen Chow.

Carina Lau, a fellow actor, has been in a steady relationship with him since 1989. Despite this, the couple have no intention of marrying.

Leung also has an on-and-off Cantopop and Mandarin pop singing career and sang the theme song of Infernal Affairs with Andy Lau.

Leung speaks fluent and impeccable English and is well read and well versed on historic issues. During the late 1990’s, some predicted that it would be difficult for him to break into Hollywood since he would not take on degrading roles because of Leung’s pride and character. To date, he has not done a Hollywood movie, but is primed to appear in one after signing on with an American film agent.

During the promotion of the movie Hero, pro-British and pro-colonial politicians and commentators in Hong Kong attacked Leung for expressing his view on the historic impacts of the 1989 Tiananmen Square demonstration. Under constant political pressure, Leung made single statement that he may have been quoted out of context. [3] However, the movie magazine editor said that the orginal statement was not out of context.

Leung’s views are similar to that of most overseas-based Chinese scholars such as Dr. Pei Minxin.

In the recently aired new series “To Catch the Uncatchable”, Gilbert Lam plays an insurance sales manager who exchanges sexual favours with rich clients for business and this storyline has incurred the displeasure of the insurance industry, saying that this gives a bad portrayal of insurance professionals and preparing letters of complaint to TVB.

In response to his character being criticised, Gilbert agrees, saying: “Oh? There are complaints? I feel that they should to, but you’d better ask the producer. Making series is just for entertainment, but I do feel there is a problem and they should complain!” He indicates that at the time, he should have been filming another series and when the producer asked him to play the part it was difficult to fit this into his schedule. However the producer talked him round because there were not many scenes and this was an integral part of the story, so he agreed. However, when he received the script, he felt that there was a problem with the storyline and the role, but as he had agreed, he had to carry out his duties and as an artiste, no matter how bad the character is, he still has to play it.

He says: “When I received the script, I did reflect my feelings and asked if we had to take it so far, because there is no evidence that these things do take place in real life and this was taking things too far. I felt uncomfortable and didn’t really get into the part when we filmed it. After it was aired, I daren’t go out because I am afraid of being scolded in the street. I have a lot of friends who sell insurance products and they have called me for a joke, asking if I needed to do this. I would never have thought that there are still this kind of remarks, this has to be the worst of all the nasty characters I have played.”

Gilbert reveals that his friends have complained to him about this role that has upset the insurance industry and as the actor behind the role, he is very apologetic and expresses to everyone: “Please don’t be so angry, come to my dessert store and everyone who works for an insurance company can have a 20% discount!”

As for producer Tsui Ching Hong, he says that as “To Catch” is a modern show, then the storyline has a chance of reflecting a certain industry or profession and Dayo Wong’s police officer character also has some comedic elements. In every profession there are good people and bad people and Gilbert Lam’s bad insurance salesman does not reflect on the industry as a whole. The scriptwriters based this story on articles they had seen in the news and in real life society and in the same light, Ada Choi plays a very hard working insurance professional. He says: “To have such a big response is a little exaggerated, but I can’t blame them. However, before airing, the show was passed through TVB’s internal censors and they had to approve this before it was allowed to be broadcast.”

Ken-ken is simply the cutest thing ever. His voice is simply amazing. It’s really, really high pitched and truly adorable, even if he’s still quite upset that it hasn’t changed yet. He and Go became close after joining Johnny\’s and always hung out together. Ken-ken adores dogs and had two of the: Indian Blue Angel (aka Blue) and Little Prince J Wolf (aka J). He didn\’t go to high school, but went to a trade school instead. He never finished, though, since he made it big with V6.

Work:

Ken-ken was simply made to be an idol. As V6\’s heartthrob, he’s definitely a fan favorite. It’s truly amazing, because when you watch him in concert, he simply glows. Other members may get sweaty and exhausted, but Ken-ken\’s hair is still fluffy and he looks just perfect. Such is the power of Johnny\’s. Unfortunately, his voice is so high and painfully cute that it sticks out like a sore thumb, so he doesn’t do as many of the V6 solos as other members. It seems that this changed somewhat around the time of the “Volume 6″ and “seVen” albums. Ken-ken seems to have gotten more solos, and performed them very solidly. Maybe he’s finally coming to terms with the fact that his voice will never change… Ken-ken is a regular member on Itou-ke no Shokutaku (The Itou Family’s Dinner Table), a show that has a “family” of celebrities who review helpful household tips. As strange as it sounds, it’s a remarkarkably interesting show and really popular. Ken-ken is also constantly enlisted to do various roles in TV dramas, my personaly favorite being 2001\’s Neverland. Much to my surprise, he turned out to be quite a strong actor, handling a very complex role with ease. In 2004, Ken starred in a stage production of “The Graduate”. Now tell me THAT’S not scary.

Personality:

Just because Ken-ken\’s cute, don\’t think he\’s some little angel. He can be quite loud, violent, and painfully energetic. He’s mischevious at time, acting like a little kid, and tends to say things without really thinking about them first.

According to other members of V6, Ken-ken is in the worst health. He has allergies, has bad hay fever, and can\’t take many types of medicine. He can’t even eat soba. To make up for his poor health, Ken-ken stocks
up on vitamins. He hates early mornings, and is apparently a bit of a
pack rat. He\’s really into recycling and excersizing, and apparently
has no tolerance for alcohol. Although he sometimes says things that
don\’t really make much sense, you can tell that Ken-ken is actually very
intelligent and great at languages.

Fun Anecdotes & Misc.

During one Gakkou e Ikou segment, Ken-ken laughed at a young adolescent boy, giggling hysterically at how funny the boy\’s voice sounded. At
which point the V6 member working with him turned to Ken-ken and replied, “Like you should talk.\” Needless to say, Ken-ken stopped laughing pretty quickly. ;^_^ His inability to hold liquor is also amazing. During a party, Ken-ken was \”peer pressured\” into chugging his beer. Not only did he grimace the whole time, but he turned red immediately afterwards.

In other segments, he\’s proved his intelligence and talent with languages. While in the country with Go, Ken-ken signed a log book and included an impromptu haiku with perfect 5-7-5. Ken-ken was rather proud; Go looked baffled. Whenever V6 goes abroad, Ken-ken always seems to be the one who learns a few key phrases in the local language and spouts them when necessary. I have no idea how good his pronunciation is, but the locals always seem to understand him, which is a good sign. He was also able to perfectly speak an unusual dialect of Japanese for a segment, just by studying his butt off during the short plane ride.

Born in Ipoh, Malaysia to a family of six as the third child amidst two older brothers and one younger sister, the first step of Wong Guang Liang’s journey in the world of music began when his parents invested into a piano (a semitone lower) for him and his younger sister. Wong was ten years old at the time. He then began to accompany his six year-old younger sister to attend piano lessons together. He has practiced the piano for 7 years since then.

Wong, as a devout Catholic, often sang in the church choir during his school days and was once a choir teacher at a church. Donnie Yen (甄子丹, pinyin: Zhēn Zi dān, born July 27, 1963), is a martial artist and a film actor. The son of martial arts master Bow Sim Mark, Yen was born in Guangdong (Canton) and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. He is a well known film and television actor in Hong Kong and, more recently, in the West, having been featured in many movies with prominent, internationally known actors such as Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh. Donnie’s younger sister Chris (Chi-Ching) is also an accomplished martial artist and rising actress, recently appearing in the small film “The Adventures of Johnny Dao.”

From a young age, Yen was interested in martial arts of all kind, experimenting with various styles, from Taekwondo to Wushu. Yen decided to stick with Wushu, and moved to Beijing to further train. During his training in China, his instructor Mr. Lee demanded Donnie cut his hippie-style mullet as it was inappropriate. It was there that he met Yuen Woo-ping, an up and coming fight choreographer. Yen’s first film role was at age 19 in 1984 in the film Xiao Tai Ji. The film revolved around drunken Tai Chi, and although not a critical success, the film helped Yen to achieve further notability. Over the years, Donnie would send martial arts magazines and books from North America back to Mr. Lee in China.

However, Yen gained his breakthrough role in 1992 as General Lan in Once Upon a Time in China II. His finale fight against Wong Fei-Hung (Jet Li) remains one of the most celebrated fights in martial arts films to this day. This fight scene could be considered one of the very best in martial arts films, and has been revisited to an extent in 2002’s Hero, where Yen and Li face off again.

In 1997, Yen started a production company known as Bullet Films, and made his directorial debut. Two of his films, Legend of the Wolf and Ballistic Kiss, in which he also starred, are widely considered to be groundbreaking in their style and tone.

Donnie was married in 2003 in Toronto. He has a daughter, Jasmine. Donnie has a son from a previous relationship. His name is Man Cheuk Yen.

Donnie Yen choreographed most of the fighting animation in the 2004 videogame Onimusha 3 (Also starring Kaneshiro Takeshi and Jean Reno).

Most recently, Donnie can be seen as Chu in Tsui Hark’s wuxia epic Seven Swords, and opposite Sammo Hung and Simon Yam in the brutal crime drama Sha Po Lang. Both films were featured this year at the Toronto Film Festival.

In 2000 Donnie made his American film debut as the immortal Jin Ke in Highlander: Endgame (2000). He has also appeared in Blade II (2002) and will be seen next in Jackie Chan’s Shanghai Knights (2003) and Ying xiong (2002) with Jet Li.

Born in the Chinese province of Canton, Yen came to Hong Kong at age two. He lived there until he was eleven, then moved to Boston, MA. He spent his early teenage years there, where his mother, Bow Sim-Mark, a world famous Wushu and Tai Chi master, ran the internationally known Chinese Wushu Research Institute, and martial arts became a major influence in his life. His footsteps would soon lead him down the less traveled path, his destiny perhaps. But first he would study classical piano, favoring Chopin, music being the other inspiration in his life. His father, Klysler Yen, the Boston editor of Sing Tao, an international Chinese daily paper, plays the violin and a similar-sounding stringed instrument, the Chinese erh-wu while his mother sings soprano. The younger Yen’s sensitivity to rhythm would eventually make its way into the films he directed, adding texture and depth.

At the dawn of the new millennium, Enrique Iglesias was the best-selling Latin recording artist in the world. The son of multimillion-selling singer Julio Iglesias, Enrique was born in Madrid, Spain, where he lived with his mother, his brother Julio, and his sister Chabeli. In 1982, his mother sent them to live in Miami with their father. While there, Enrique was exposed to three different cultures and musical influences — Hispanic, European, and American.

Iglesias’ own career started when he was still attending Gulliver Private School, a very prestigious school in Miami. He made his singing debut in a production of Hello, Dolly, after which he began practicing his singing without his parents knowing. Athena Chu Yan was born on October 25, 1971. She entered the HK Academy for Performing Arts around 1990 and graduated in 1992. During that time, Chu earned tuition money by working at TVB as the host of children’s shows. Shortly after graduation, she made her movie debut in Fight Back to School 2 and was nominated for a Best New Artist HK Film Award. Back to Hong Kong
A year after returning to Hong Kong, she burst into the spotlight with her new album Coming Home, which incorporated R&B influences like her previous two and was a drastic change in musical direction from the more traditional Cantopop fare of her earlier albums. On this album, she covered the song “Fragile Woman,” originally sung by the Japanese music diva Miyuki Nakajima. While this song had been covered by other Chinese singers, her angelic version nonetheless swept over Hong Kong and singlehandedly lifted her to superstardom. Also, she sang her first English-language song, “Kisses in the Wind,” and starred in TVB shows such as Files of Justice II (壹號皇庭II) and Legendary Ranger (原振俠).

Changing her style
Not satisfied to rest on her laurels, she also wrote her own Mandarin ballad “No Regrets” (執迷不悔) in 1993, which led many people to praise her not just as a talented singer but as a gifted songwriter as well; in February, the similarly titled album was released and became an instant best-seller. Although the songs were mostly more soft contemporary arrangements, like most of what was being traditionally released in Hong Kong, it also had a few dance songs and two versions of the title track: one in Mandarin and the other in Cantonese, with new lyrics by Chen Shao Qi (the Mandarin version is by far the more popular one).

Since then, she has completely shed any R&B influence and has moved on to produce works of considerable originality and a more alternative flavor, epitomized in her next album 100,000 Whys (released in September 1993). Before this album was released, a few of its tracks were mainstream enough to air in radio transmissions among listeners. Therefore, it became another instant best-seller in the same year with No Regrets and people’s recognition of her first introduction to the alternative rock from the West.

In 1994, she changed her stage name back to her original name “Wong Fei” (王菲) for all subsequent releases in Cantonese Hong Kong, one year later in the Mandarin market.

It was around this time that she began experimenting with alternative music styles from the West. The ethereal Scottish post-punk group Cocteau Twins’ influence on her was clearly shown in her next Cantonese album, Random Thoughts. She learned the unique vocal stylings of Dolores O’Riordan of the Irish band The Cranberries, which culminated in her covering their song “Dreams” in Chungking Express (retitled as “Dream Person” for Faye’s Random Thoughts (胡思亂想)) and other songs by such other artists as The Sundays and Tori Amos. Besides covering songs and learning distinct vocal techniques, Wong recorded her own compositions like “Pledge” (誓言), co-written by and featuring Dou Wei on Di Zi, and her first and only rap song “Exit” (出路). She also sang songs written by others, such as “Pure Love” (純情) and “Sleepwalk” (夢遊).

Because of the diversity of musical and aesthetic styles contained in these releases, they became quite influential among singers (old and new) as well as consumers in the Asian markets. To Wong’s credit, each album still carried a balance between her preferred artistic taste and Cinepoly’s commercial preference.

Mandarin market
Besides two Cantonese albums in 1994, Wong released another two in Mandarin in Taiwan, Mystery (迷) and Sky (天空). The runaway hit “I’m Willing” (我願意) became her trademark song throughout the Chinese-speaking world for years to come. Deemed as one of the greatest Chinese songs of the late 20th century, it has been covered by many other Chinese singers, such as Gigi Leung, Sammi Cheng, Jay Chou, and more.

While her music in Hong Kong had gone remarkably away from the mainstream, these two Mandarin albums, as her first attempt to enter the Taiwan (and later the mainland) market, were nonetheless the warmest and most traditional during her entire career and are especially cherished by her old fans. Critics generally agree that Yang Minghuang, the producer of these albums, made them achievingly successful; although Faye Wong would still have climbed to the top, her music style would have been completely different from how it turned out, that is to say: exquisite and romantic as opposed to exotic, sharply distinctive and peculiarly artistic.

Four best-selling albums both in the Cantonese and Mandarin-speaking regions, a record-breaking series of 18 consecutive concerts in Hong Kong and a widely acclaimed film (Chungking Express) all in 1994: these achievements together made her the single most eminent female Hong Kong singer at that time. However, as a northern girl with an upbringing at odds with the way of life in Hong Kong, her distaste for the profit-oriented entertainment industry became more and more apparent. Synthesis recently corresponded with Lam via e-mail and discussed her young film career and the ups and downs of working in Hong Kong cinema.

You’ve made your career as both a film actress and a recording artist in Hong Kong and Taiwan, but you were born in Vancouver, BC. Had you always had exposure to Hong Kong cinema?
Up until now, I’ve felt that I’m not all that familiar with Hong Kong cinema. I know films from the ‘90s, but before that, not really. Sure, I’ve seen Hong Kong films when I was young through rental services or cable TV back home. For me, it’s pure family entertainment because my parents would watch them. A little closer to home for them, I suppose.

You were “discovered” while on vacation to Taiwan. Did you have any interest in being involved in films before that or were you more interested in becoming a recording artist?
At 15 years old I didn’t know what I got myself into. I think at that point I just thought, “sure, why not?” I wanted to start out as an actress, but my agent said the Taiwan film industry is tough. So, I started out as an recording artist with Polygram. I’ve become a film fanatic for the past five years.

What do you enjoy most about acting? What do you get out of it that you didn’t from performing music?
I enjoy the “moment” of being in character and on set with good co-actors, script, director, crew and environment. When you’re into a character and in the moment, it is a rush or an addiction. You don’t want it to stop. Sometimes I think it’s easier to be in-character than be yourself. Standing on stage and singing in front of a big crowd makes me nervous. I don’t know how to enjoy that as much, yet. You feel naked somehow.

How did working in the entertainment industry in Taiwan prepare you for working in Hong Kong?
Well, I didn’t work as much in Taiwan compared to Hong Kong because there was a break. I returned to my studies (completed grade 11/12) and didn’t work in this industry. I was waiting for a good opportunity and good timing. Time in Taipei prepared me spiritually for Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a city that works on a fast pace. It is easy to lose yourself. So, you must know what you’re doing, what you like and don’t like and stand for yourself.

Since you’ve also worked as a recording artist, how do you think that affects the types of roles you’re offered?
Actually, I think it the other way around. After I started acting four years ago [Karena’s debut film was July Rhapsody in 2001], I realized it has helped me with my singing, because I’m “in-character” when I sing. Every little thing I am sensitive with from the lyrics, to the tone of voice, the storytelling, etc. For instance, I did a musical soundtrack last November; in one of the songs, I had to portray many crazy characters. If I didn’t have acting experience I don’t think I could’ve done it as well.

Why do you think Asian films have started to make such a big impact in Hollywood? Is Asian cinema at all concerned with Hollywood trends, or does it prefer to develop on its own? Are you at all concerned with breaking into American films?
I think Asian films are noticed because it’s new to the American audiences. We shoot film with a different rhythm, different camera angles and different approach to storytelling. I think it’s good to develop on its own trends. I heard that one of my previous films may or may not be remade in English. I am happy, but I am in no rush.

How do you view the climate for female actors in Hong Kong? Do you think there are enough strong roles for women? How do you think roles for women in Hong Kong cinema compare to those in American cinema?
I don’t think there are enough women roles. Most films in Hong Kong are more focused on the plot, not their characters. In America, they have bigger market, finances, more time on their hands and so on.

How would you describe the film community in Hong Kong? I’ve noticed how a lot of the same names and faces pop up. Is the community really close or is it rather clique-ish? Is it difficult for newer actors and filmmakers to break into the Hong Kong film industry?
The film community in Hong Kong isn’t really that big. It’s either you have market value or you don’t (e.g. box office, big name/popularity). It isn’t tough for new actors to get in the industry, but to stay around is a tough one. You really have to give it your best and continue to learn, always.

Though you are of Asian descent, was it difficult for you to break into the film industry in Hong Kong being native Canadian?
Yes, it was difficult for me because when I came to Hong Kong four years ago, my Cantonese wasn’t all that good. I had someone read all my dialog on tape and practice everyday for one week before shoot. Now I can read and speak fluent Cantonese. I used to feel bad because I’m second generation Canadian Chinese; I don’t know my roots as well as my other Chinese friends. They are real proud and deep in their roots. Now, when I think of it, I have less burden because I don’t really have roots or long history before me. I can start from zero and be daring to make my beginnings.

After the three girls head this they did not really accept it, because it has not been what they were thinking. All of them came from different places. They never telephoned each other and only said ‘hi’ when they met. Because most of the songs in the album did not require them to sing together, their relationship was not very good, making the company worry. When the company then let them stay in the same room in the same dormitory, the girls were worried that they would argue because of their different personalities. But the company hoped that by this they could learn to know and cooperate with each other. To prevent them from arguing, the record company set a few rules of life for the girls living in the dormitory. After a week, the record company’s worries were gone because the three girls were closer to each other and could be mistaken as triplets! Just like that, the three girls lived in a small dormitory together for a few months and passed on flues and boredom to each other. Agnes Monica always brought a big controversy whether its about her fashion, her songs and even her hairstyle. But the controversy make her unforgetable.

Chapter one - First touch with the entertainment world

Born in July 1 st 1986. She is names Agnes Monica Muljoto. Now, she is well known as Agnes Monica. Even tough she was a child, everyone have recognized that she is different compared to other children. While other children spend their day with playing with others, she already started her hardwork. She became a singer and released 3 album called “Si Meong, Yess and Bala-bala” . And not enough with that career she became a presenter in VAN (Video Anak Anteve), Tralala-Trilili in RCTI and Diva Romeo in Trans TV. And her hard work got the prize on 1999 she got an award from Panasonic Awards. She became the most favorite children presenter for her work at tralala trilili and the award she received is not stopping but get more and more every year.

Chapter two - Being successful

When she was 15 years old, not only she played in a very big hit series called “ Pernikahan Dini ” but also she is trusted to sing the series theme song. The series itself is a big test for her. Because In the series she had to act as a teenager who got married by accident and has a child. This role is surely hard to act because she is only 15. But once again she proves that she is a real actress .As the result for her role in “Pernikahan Dini” series she got 4 awards which are :The most popular drama series by viewers choice and most favorite drama actress in 2001 from Panasonic Awards , then in 2002 she got Most popular drama and again most favorite drama actress. And of course when you become a successful actress you will get lot of gossips around you because of for playing in this series is she is said to be one of the most expensive highly paid actress. The year 2002 surely a very busy year for her, she acted in 3 series “Lupus”, “ Kejarlah Daku Kau Kutangkap” and “ Amanda”. For additional information “Kejarlah Daku kau Kutangkap” is a remake from Indonesia best seller movie.

In 2003 it’s a busier year to her. She is not only continuing her acting career but also released an album. Her first adult album called “ the Story Goes”. The album is really shows her mature skill in singing, look at her voice in the song “ Jera”, “ Ku tlah jatuh cinta “ and “ Bilang Saja “ . A lot of big singer help her to made this album, Ahmad Dhani, Abdee Slank and Titi DJ. The series she played in this year are “ Cewekku Jutek” which also included her song “ Indah” for the theme song and “ Kau yang terindah”. In this year she got 1 award from Panasonic Award for Best Actress.

Some things just get better with age, like wines or Agnes Monica. In 2004,she become more popular. She played in 2 series “ Bunga Perawan” and “ Cantik”. In addition this year she planned to go international. She started it with winning an award from Anugerah Planet Muzik Singapore for New Female Artist Awards, then get along with that she got 3 more awards from AMI Samsung 2004 for her music career Best duo for her collaboration with Ahmad Dhani, Best singer, and Best dance and techno for her song Bilang Saja plus an award from SCTV Award for her acting in Cantik.

Chapter three - Her style, Her performances

Nowadays, Agnes Monica has became Indonesia role model. She change her style so many times. And many people are following her style. From her series Amanda she influence people to use preppy look for their style and then don’t forget about her hairstyle. Because of Amanda series her hairstyle become so famous. I have experienced it myself ,once when I was in a salon I heard one of the customer said this “ Do you know Amanda style? Well I want my hair to be like her”. Not just for the series, her casual style also influenced people. She usually wears tank top. Now, when you want to try to find a white tank top just ask the shopkeeper” Do you have Agnes Monica tank top?” and they will understand that.

Performances. That’s what make people really wait for her . Her performance always perfect. When people decide to watch an artist to perform, they always want the artist performances become perfect includes their style, their voice and as well their communication with the audience. And when you watch Agnes Monica you will get all of that. She always powerful at the stage, singing, dancing she can do both of that perfectly. And not many Indonesian artist who can dance perfectly like American artist such as Britney Spears. Once I remembered she ever sang Britney’s Song called “ Me Against the Music” and she sang it better than her.

One thing that make people really favor Agnes is because although she is a big actress she never forget her GOD. Unlike the other actress who like to hide their religious side, Agnes is not like that. In every awards she accept she never forget to thank her savior JESUS CHRIST. Biography
She started when she was 14 and started appearing in Hong Kong movies and commercials. At 15, she auditioned for a girlband to be launched by BMG Records called 4 in Love and passed with flying colors. From then on, she was called “Rainie”. She moved to Taiwan, and pursued her acting career as she lived with her co-band members under one roof.
